Evan Hugh
Tai Chi practitioner, digeridoo player, old-soul friend...
June 2012, Van Cortland Park

I met Evan Hugh (originally from Jamaica) back in 1999 at the tip of Riverside Park - where I first started practicing trombone outside after graduating from MSM. He worked (and still works) for New York City Parks, and would come there on his time off to practice Tai Chi and digeridoo... I was a couple hundred feet away on the grass... we were both doing are thing, and over time eventually trusted and greeted one another and started talking... We then got to improvising digeridoo/trombone duets and he started teaching me the very beginnings of Tai Chi (he is very advanced)... It was beautiful and as natural as could be, devoid of any "scene"... The sort of connection in NYC I value more than just about any other... We went out of touch for a few years and in 2010 struck things back up. He is one of the purest souls I know... He lives in the Bronx and exercises regularly in the uppermost regions Van Cortland Park, and from time to time picks me up in the morning and we spend about half the day there, stretching with our sounds and energy, reasoning in nature, sharing that open revitalizing space so important to us in our healthful/mindful balance in this city...
