I have my Mom to thank for getting me started with this... It was after our family visited Keith Harding's World of Mechanical Music in Northleach, England, that she sent me one of these toys in the mail. Little did I know what sort of ideas and inspiration it would spawn. A great way to imagine how shapes, patterns and distances (rhythm) can make for this small diatonic music. The mechanism covers two octaves in the key of A-flat. Made by the Kikkerland company, you can purchase these for $15 on their website, and Urban Outfitters now even sells them. They come with just a few of the paper strips and a puncher to punch them with. I recommend purchasing extra strips ($6 for five), as they go fast. After a while of considerable use, the plastic gears and crank can start to squeak and the paper strips don't feed through as evenly, so you may need to purchase another.
