There are official composers who dress up in a dinner suit and Bohemian ones who wear jeans. I do not wear either. In every country and every system there are official composers and the complete outsiders. It seems very disturbing that I do not belong to either group. In spite of that I usually get very good reviews, but most critics are discomfited by my not fitting into either mold. What can I do? My position in this respect is the same as what I have said about my music, I think. There must be some kind of order, but not too much of it, and it should not be dogmatic. But there must not be disorder either.
Music should not be normal, well-bred, with its tie all neat.
